Testimonials 2005
Once again,
kudos to you and all involved in putting on a stellar event. I PR'd again this
time. I owe it all to you-and that loud boom at the start (which we think may
have come from a port-a-lav). Look for us again next year.
Debbie McGee
My
complements to the Steamtown Marathon organizers and support staff. No race,
and I've done hundreds, has done a better job of organizing and providing runner
support. From registration to packet pickup to aid stations to police and EMTs to finish line, Steamtown is there with the best I've seen. Great job and many
thanks to all.
Garnett
I just wanted to take a moment to
say thank you! This was my 6th Steamtown Marathon and once again I had a
wonderful time! You folks really know how to put on a race! EVERYTHING goes so
smoothly (at least you make it look like it does). You really make it
worth traveling from Long Island. I look forward to your race every year. Many
thanks to the terrific volunteers and of course all the townspeople who come out
to cheer us on despite the rather gloomy weather. From waiting at the school in
Forest City all the way to the finish line in Scranton and all the aid stations
in between...everything was great! Thanks for another fun time. See you next
year!

First off, let me congratulate the organizers of the Steamtown Marathon. This was without a doubt the most organized and friendliest marathon I've ever run. Your volunteers were exceptional!! The residents of all the townships the course wound through were outstanding! Everything was first rate! Even the weather was runner friendly. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.Catherine Van Brocklin
Thank you for putting on such a wonderful marathon. Everything
about the Steamtown Marathon experience was awesome. This was my second time
running Steamtown and both times have been excellent.
The
volunteers, course, and amenities (massage and showers----a hot shower at the
end of a marathon!!) were terrific. I will recommend your race to other runners
and I will definitely return again to run. Thank you again.
David Hudak
EXCELLENT Job! This was my eighth marathon, and
was the best organized, had the best volunteers, and most enthusiastic
spectators I have seen. Even the police officers were encouraging and polite.
THANK YOU.
Barbara Guarnuccio
I just wanted to
extend a big thank you to you and the entire Steamtown Marathon team for putting
on an absolutely stellar event. All of the wonderful things that I had heard
about Steamtown turned out to be true! From the friendly and entertaining email
missives to the yummy cuisine at the Pasta Party to the throngs of cheering
supportive race
enthusiasts along the way to the really spiffy medal that appeared magically
around my neck, everything went smoothly and was a lot of fun. And how did you
manage to arrange such perfect weather?
Count me in for next year!
Tom Curbishley
Thank you for an amazing marathon...MY FIRST TIME WAS AWESOME!!!
What a well organized, fun, beautiful, perfectly run event...YOU GUYS ROCK!
My goal of finishing was achieved....I knew I would finish when
I heard the majestic opening cannon "poof" (:-). I plan to do it again and
hopefully improve my time. I was really happy
with my 5:05 (of course I subtract the 4 min. I used for bathroom breaks when I
tell my friends) but think I can do better. I was also motivated to "move" when
you told me a pack of wild
dogs gets sent out to "take care" of stragglers...Ha Ha. I'll see you (or meet)
you next year!
Sherrie Maricle
I just wanted to le you know what a wonderful experience this marathon was. It was my first marathon, and I cannot imagine a better organized event. The volunteers were outstanding, your e-mails gave the event a personal touch and I can't say enough about the people in NE PA and the support they gave all of us runners. Thanks for all of the work that goes in to this event!
Ken Davis

Many thanks for a super race--the volunteers and townspeople really make Steamtown special--especially the water stop where everyone was in Mardi Gras garb--hilarious!Thanks again,
Thanks for the
information and for running a great race. Steamtown was my first marathon and
it was a great experiences. All of the volunteers were so enthusiastic and
encouraging. Everything seemed to go so smoothly and it was really a nice day.
Thanks so much. Also, your informative and comical emails were great - they were
entertaining and kept me really excited for the race.
Sue Brown
Just want to thank
you for an awesome race. I had a blast! It was extremely well organized and the
people were uncommonly nice. Great course. You even got the rain to stop for us.
Well done. Congratulations and maybe I'll see you next year.
Thanks,
Kate
P.S. I qualified!
Wanted to thank you for not only putting on a fantastic marathon, but for the time you take with the e-mails. Your sense of humor makes the race seem a lot more "personal" and fun rather than some that send out "canned" info. You and your team did a great job! Not only that, I ran the fastest time since '98 and qualified for Boston with 10 minutes to spare. Thanks again!
Paul
Your team organizes a fantastic run. My wife and I agreed that it was the friendliest and most organized marathon we've ever done (great support, warm gymnasium, great food, nice sugary mixture on the Gatorade). Pass along our sincere thanks to your team, the volunteers, and the kids who helped. I will recommend this run to any and all of my friends’ stupid enough to run 26.2 miles. You guys are great!

I just spent some time reading the testimonials and although I already knew it, it further emphasized to me how great a job you guys do. This was my 103rd marathon and my fifth time at Steamtown and I loved every minute of it. I certainly have run some other well organized marathons but you guys are at the top of my list as far as taking care of every possible runner friendly detail and doing it so enthusiastically and in such a positive way. Every marathon runner should experience Steamtown at least once. To be greeted at the Forest City School on a gloomy Sunday morning at 6:30AM by a bunch of happy, smiling, wonderfully enthusiastic teenagers spreads feelings of hope and joy that last far more than just 26.2 miles. My only regret is that I have to wait a whole year to experience this magic again.
Fred
First, I would like to say that from beginning to end, everything about the Steamtown Marathon was done well. All of your e-mails for the 2 weeks before the race; the extremely helpful course description held in the school auditorium on Saturday; the teenagers cheering everyone when we got off the bus, making me feel so special; and the friendliness shown by absolutely every volunteer were incredible. I've done 11 marathons before this one, (mostly big city marathons) and I have to rank this one as the best. Thank you.
Brigitte
Just
wanted to thank you for an AWESOME marathon experience. Dave Blair and me, Lara
Blair, are from Oregon and we decided this is our new favorite marathon. So
organized, fun and FAST. The icing on the cake was finally qualifying for
Boston. Outstanding job to all volunteers and officials.
Lara Blair
AWESOME
RACE! WE ARE ALL COMING BACK AND BRINGING MORE STRIDERS! Thank you for such an
amazing experience.

Steamtown was my 15th marathon and I've heard for the past few months how organized this
race was, how great the volunteers were, blah blah. Well my comment to all of
this is you've really sold yourself short and you ALL deserve a finishers medal
for the hard work that went into such a small race. The ENTIRE event was
flawless from this runner's point of view, there were no stones left unturned
and all my questions were answered before I had the chance to ask. The 2:00
talk at the expo was 100% as far as advice to run this race - they even talked
about the fresh wood chips. Did I mention that I ran a PR by over a minute, and
I had 6 minutes to spare to qualify for Boston? Of course my training paid off,
but so did the work of your "all volunteer" crew. Besides, the misty rain was
stellar. Thanks for everything from start to finish. You'll see me next
year...and as my teenage daughter would say, "You GUYS ROCK!"
Heather - Norfolk, MA
I
ran your marathon on Sunday and just wanted to thank you for everything involved
in putting on such a great race. Nearly everything was perfect. You even
managed to get it to stop raining! Seriously, from an organization point of
view, NY, Marine Corps and Philly (my three other marathons) have nothing on
you. The volunteers were wonderful. The crowds, while small, were enthusiastic
and very supportive. The water stops were run professionally. Having use of the
gym before the start was great. The bus service to the start was absolutely
convenient. Check-in was a breeze. The pre-race emails were informative and
funny. The finish line area (food, baggage pick-up, etc.) was well thought
out. The course was incredible.
Thank you for a great race! This was my third Steamtown, and of my 14 marathons, this is the only race I've run more than once. It is by far the most well organized, friendly, and exciting marathon there is. The volunteers and community members make this such a fun event. The Mardi Gras water station was a blast, and the entire neighborhood around the hill at mile 24 was so enthusiastic I was smiling the whole way through.
My husband, Tom, ran his first marathon on Sunday. He was there to support me for both of my previous Steamtowns and decided after watching all of the excitement, he didn't want to be relegated to the sidelines again. Your amazing race inspired him to train and finally do it! Best of all, we were able to cross the finish line together.
Please pass along our thanks to all of the volunteers on the course. They
have no idea how much we appreciate them and what a difference they make!
Thanks also to all of you for your hard work and dedication. You even managed
to stop the rain in time for the race!
Stacey Pietras
I just have to tell all the race coordinators, volunteers, the school and scout groups and residents along the race route what outstanding people you are! The race is beautifully run with lots of water/Gatorade and porta-pottie stops and the people are so enthusiastic and supportive of the runners. As one of the many runners, I think I can speak for most when I say the welcome we receive from everyone is wonderful. I really enjoy running this marathon...........it truly is fun the whole 26.2 miles (actually that last long hill before the finish line is a bite). :-) Thank you to all involved; you are to be commended for a job WELL DONE!
Colleen Himelright
This is to add my voice of thanks to the many others. This was only my second Steamtown, and I'm already taking for granted its reputation as an extremely well organized event that leaves very little to chance, and makes the whole weekend very runner and family friendly, and which leaves the runners with little to be anxious about except those 26 miles...
My wife, who waited at the finish line, also enjoyed the whole atmosphere, loved "downtown" Scranton, and said she enjoyed the event even more than Boston, which we've been to several times. Thanks again and congratulations on the world class organization bestowed on a relatively small race. You
did a fantastic job on the wonderful Steamtown Marathon. It was my 10th marathon and by far the best organized and smoothly run. I'm always lost and I never was...the whole weekend...due to your clear directions for every detail. We had the best time. The people out cheering were beyond friendly and helpful. A great event!

I
just wanted to say Thank You a million times over!!! Steamtown was my first
marathon and I have to tell you, it was the best experience of my life. I am
counting the days till next year (in between icing all my achy limbs!!). I
appreciate all the emails and updates - being from Boston I thought I would be
out of the loop, but not the case! You guys are first class and should be
extremely proud of the job you did! Keep up the good work and see you next
year!!
Jaye Grochowski First-time Marathoner
I
wanted to add my compliments to all the others for your part in this event. I
loved getting your emails and will miss them dearly. I had friends doing
Chicago and forwarded your emails to them. They were very jealous. The quotes
were wonderful, the updates informative and timely.
I have competed in several hundred events
over the last 30 years but none so well supported. The water station
volunteers, the high school kids, all the volunteers were so helpful and
pleasant.
Beth Thomas
One more e-mail deserves another. I've run 13 marathons so far and this was by far the best organized race I've participated in. I had hoped to re-qualify for Boston, but that didn't quite happen (old age is beginning to set in I'm afraid). Nonetheless, it was an outstanding race experience - - the expo, the facilities (you were right, that High School was impressive), the race support, the crowd, the course....everything was perfect. I think I'd prefer to run Steamtown again over Boston any time. Congratulations on organizing and pulling off a great event. I'll be back.

It sounds like I am late in my thanks but I wanted to let you know I really enjoyed the Steamtown Marathon. I have run races with 18,000 starters and now one with 1,500. Steamtown is the best. The volunteers and organization were perfect. In regards to the course itself, I told my wife it was like running across a beautiful part of America.
I
also appreciate your email and your sense of humor. The email gave me a few
laughs and helped me prepare for the race. I don't know if I will ever make it
back to Scranton from San Antonio, but I will definitely recommend the event to
my friends.

I
want to thank you for all the effort that you all put in to make the Steamtown Marathon such a perfect experience for me. This was my first marathon - I chose
Scranton based on what I had read about your hospitality. What can I say,
besides that it was all true! The course was beautiful and the weather was
great, but it really was the people that made me have such a great time. Thank
you again!

This was my first marathon. I ended up in the medical area getting an IV after the race because of dehydration and high blood sugar. I am on crutches because I tore up a tendon in my foot running the race. Will I do it again? You bet! What a great experience from the moment I got there to the moment I left. From the welcome in Forest City (where do the cheerleaders get their energy that early) to all the volunteers who encouraged me on the course to all of the people who tended to me in the medical area. Now I see why you have the reputation of the best small marathon in the country. With the exception of my wedding and the birth of my children, this was the best experience of my life! Thank you to you and all the volunteers.
Joe Eberle
I just wanted to let ya’ll know that you did a fabulous job organizing and putting on this marathon. Everyone from spectators to organizers to volunteers was extremely friendly. The course was beautiful. Although I have only run two marathons, I think it will be difficult to top this one. The fast downhill course gave me a 13 minute PR. I was truly pleased with my Steamtown experience. The entire race committee is to be commended for such a great job.
Keith Pierce
It was great to be able to stay in the gym prior the marathon, the bathroom facilities were plentiful, the bus transportation was well organized, the students at the high school provided lots of enthusiasm, I liked how the stations were marked Gatorade first and water second and how the volunteers shouted that out as you approached the stations, and the massages after were awesome and the food was great !!! Thanks for the pasta, pop drinks, sweets, fruit and chips and pizza etc... and the kids at the baggage pick up were great. For me the experience was awesome and I am in awe at how well everything was looked after.
Congratulations on hosting a wonderful marathon. Everyone in the area should be proud of themselves, you really know how to host a great party/marathon. I am going to miss the race director's quotes !!!

Great
job with these e-mails. They were very helpful. It's the first time I've had
someone from the marathon committee communicate to me on a weekly basis. And the
weather on Sunday.............well, for marathons it just doesn't get any
better.

I just wanted to say thank you for putting on a great race!!!!!! This was my first time running your race and I will say it was one of the best races I have run. This was my 21st Marathon, and it was a PR of over 16 minutes for me. I have now also qualified for Boston :-) I have run Boston the last 7 years....but this one will be special, because I earned the right to be there.
Domenick S. D'Amico
Just wanted to congratulate you on an event well done. This was my 9th (and fastest!) marathon and an extremely enjoyable weekend. The hospitality displayed by your army of volunteers was truly second to none and I will be recommending this race to all of the members of my track club for next year. The power point presentation on the course was particularly helpful to me, as I knew where I could push for those extra minutes to qualify for Boston and where to take it easy to conserve for the hills, not to mention knowing that the section with wood chips was there and how long it was...very helpful for not getting discouraged while on the course. The strategy you suggested paid off as I was able to qualify for Boston with some time to spare (a 13 minute PR) and I felt great as I passed all of those who went out too fast. So thanks again for all that you do, keep up the great work! I hope to run Steamtown again in the very near future.
Joan Bienvenue

Besides thanking you for the race....thanks for these emails. They were terrific, by far the best of any of the 18 races I've been in. Clear, concise, funny, and honest. Great stuff. Hope to see you again; enjoyed the course very much.
Don Kienz
OK That is it! I have got to write to you. I don't know what I enjoyed more…your totally funny emails or the race itself. I have laughed at every one of your jokes. The race was awesome. Thanks for all your hard work and a wonderful time. The people were amazing... I could not find one thing to complain about....no one would believe it. Thanks again...
Wendy
You may be sick of all the accolades by now. What a great experience your marathon was - my first. I am so thankful to have chosen yours. Everything I heard about it was true, and then some. The crowd support was amazing, and every detail was taken care of. I can't think of a single negative thing to say. I wish I could say thanks to every single person who helped to make the day so memorable. I hope they all know how much the runners appreciate their hard work. It was well worth the drive down from Vermont - I can't wait till next year!
Liz Galloway
The
weather could not have been better. The Scranton area adults and children's
smiles and encouragement will be a lasting memory for me of the marathon. I
appreciated how well everything came together without a flaw. I know this
required hours of preparation and volunteer time. I would recommend your
marathon to any and all!!!! Tx for the humor in your emails too. That brought
a smile to my face a bunch of times. I debated last spring between doing the
Minneapolis marathon and yours. I emailed both and your emails were so personal
and fast in coming back that I knew if I came to Scranton I would not be just a
number for rather a cared for individual. I know I made the right decision in
choosing Steamtown. Please pass my thanks on to so many who deserve it.

Just
wanted to say thank you for all your work at this year's Steamtown Marathon. It
was my first time running this race and it was amazingly well organized. You had
the best starting area I've ever seen. I enjoyed all the e-mail messages both
before and after the race. Your volunteers were incredible! Every single
volunteer I encountered was helpful, knowledgeable, supportive, happy,
friendly....WOW! Where did these people come from!? It must be utopia around the
Scranton area!! I thanked as many of them in person as I could, but please let
everyone know how much their support was appreciated. Really a first-rate job
from beginning to end! I will definitely put this race on my "to do again" list.

I
just had to email you about my experience at the Steamtown Marathon, it was
wonderful. A very well organized event and I truly had a grand experience. My
family also had a wonderful time and all in all it was the best. The people, the
spectators, the volunteers, the atmosphere, and of course the marathon itself. It was my second marathon ever in 6 days and I must say I really enjoyed this
martathon because of the care of the runners and the families and people
involved. Steamtown rocks and I can't wait to try again next year for Boston.
You all are great and you all deserve a lot of credit for your effort to put on
such a great race. Thank you.
Lisa Hill
I
just wanted to drop you a line to tell you how impressed I was with all aspects
of the race. I especially liked the warm-up area at the start and the HOT
SHOWERS at the finish. This was my fourth marathon and perhaps my 25th race and
it was by far the best organized race I have attended. It was an almost flawless
event (would have had a perfect 10 if the bus driver had not smoked on the bus
prior to boarding). Please pass on to all the volunteers my appreciation for
their time and enthusiasm. Since I PR'd and qualified for Boston your event will
be a definite good memory and as is the case with all my marathons, once the
pain is gone, I'll be thinking about returning to improve my time.

As
I sit here at my desk, my quads are remembering the wonderful run on Sunday. It
was my second marathon at Steamtown --- my 12th overall – and another PR. Best
of all, nothing had changed since my first run. The volunteers, the spectators,
the wonderful organizers, the massage people, the senior citizen band with a
couple of non-senior "ringers" --- all were just as friendly and skilled as I
had remembered. And what a beautiful part of the country. Thanks also for those
wonderful pre-race emails: The perfect blend of humor and nitty-gritty
information. I was also amazed to find that you actually had a sheet saying
where the port a lavs on the course were. Just having that knowledge meant I
didn't have to use one.
Linell
Smith
Recently, I ran the Las Vegas Marathon. I thought geez, a big, flashy city, maybe the marathon would be the same. Not the case. The scenery was beautiful. But no sign of any race being held there. Even with famous people like Michael Waltrip competing in it. To sum it up, I received a cheesy blank certificate, I guess I am supposed to fill in my time.
It
just makes running in "small" towns like Scranton and Delaware, mean so much
more. There are banners and spectators everywhere. People handing out candy,
water, etc. and you know they can't afford it. Thanking me, I am just a crazy
runner, they are the ones to be thanked.thanked.
Kathi Myers
To all of you guys and volunteers!! Thank you so very much for such a class A job you did with this marathon. I have run all 10 and see every year how hard you guys work at giving us runners what I consider our backyard Boston (heck it's even cheaper) Just thanks guys you are the very best there is.
