SPECIAL STATEMENT FROM STEAMTOWN MARATHON  

Thank you very much for your interest in The Steamtown Marathon. Unfortunately, on July 19, we reached our maximum capacity of 2,500 entries and due to liability, insurance and safety considerations, as well as capacity issues at both the starting line and finish line, we had no choice but to officially close registration.  

We know the closure of registration this early will come as a great surprise to you. In our previous 14 years we never sold out. We are very surprised that we sold out at all this year and are shocked that we sold out on July 19.  

As soon as the race closed on July 19, we were buried with e-mails from runners asking that we “make an exception” and let them register. We cannot make such exceptions for the reasons noted above, so we decided to start a waiting list. As a runner notifies us that he/she is dropping out, we will contact a name on the waiting list. Within 36 hours, we had far more names on the waiting list than can be expected to drop out of the race. Therefore, at this point, we are not able to add any more names to the waiting list.  

We realize that you have already put in many months of training for Steamtown. You may even have booked a hotel room or made a plane reservation. Some of you planned to run to honor the memory of a late family member or as a tribute to a member of our armed forces. Others have run most or all of the previous Steamtowns. We understand your disappointment and are very sorry that we will be unable to accommodate you this year. We hope you will register for Steamtown in 2011. Registration will open on April 1.  

On behalf of our race committee, we respectfully request that you not send us an e-mail requesting entry or call the Lackawanna County Convention & Visitors Bureau to plead your case. Registration is closed for 2010. There are no spots left.
