Despite a brutal wind, beads of sweat held fast to Simon Cherogony's brow, even as the champion of the sixth annual Steamtown Marathon smiled and raised his eyes to the sky. "I'll be back," the Kenyan vowed, his solar blanket still pelted by that incessant wind that plagued Cherogony and other runners through the entire 26.2 mile course on Oct. 7.
The 2001 course included several major changes designed to make the race, which has a 955-foot drop in elevation, even faster. Just past mile 14 in place of two daunting hills, runners now cross several miles of scenic Rails to Trails, a beautiful tree-lined trail of compacted dirt along the Lackawanna River. Also, the infamous "Green Ridge Hill" near mile 24 has been shortened from eight to three blocks.
Still fatigued and disappointed by his relatively slow time of 2:22:30, Cherogony managed to turn a sly smile...he was already planning strategy for victory at Steamtown next year.
"I will be coming back next year," he said, his smile wide by now. "This race is very nice, and I'm going to tell my teammates this race is very nice. I'm going to tell all six of them who live with me to come next year and run this marathon."
This year's marathon was dedicated to the victims of the attacks that struck New York City, Washington D.C. and rural Pennsylvania.
"It affected me, said Cherogony, who lives and trains in Chapel Hill, NC. You have a peaceful country, so we are sad. It has affected runners, they aren't running around New York like they did before."
For his part, fellow Kenyan Joseph Mutha, who lives and trains in Hamilton, Ontario, gave Cherogony all the competition he could summon. Mutha, who came in just 44 seconds behind Cherogony at 2:23:14, made it the closest men's finish in Steamtown history. But it wasn't easy. Temperatures in the 30's at the starting line with a biting headwind were too much for him.
"The cold really affected my muscles," Mutha said as he still massaged his right thigh. "It gave me a lot of pain. I never warmed up. The cold got me in the end."
Nelson Shertzer, 38, of Washington Borough, PA finished third in 2:28:26 and was awarded $800 for his effort.
While Cherogony and Mutha came in just 44 seconds apart, the women's finish was the closest margin of victory in Steamtown history.
Patty Fulton, 35, of Silver Spring, MD captured the Steamtown title for the second year in a row, coming in at 2:52:49. Just nine seconds later, challenger Wendy Locke of Boonton, NJ, captured second place and took home $1,000.
Fulton, who races only once a year at Steamtown, said the wind and cold slowed her time by a good two minutes from her winning 2:50:34 last year, but she is still happy with her win and its $2,000 award.
"I think I actually went out at a slower pace this year because I wanted to run a little bit smarter," she said. "But I just never warmed up. I think the wind was definitely a factor. I think if it wasn't windy it would have been perfect."
Fulton gained the lead around mile 12, passing Danville, PA's Tina Bartholemew who went on to capture third place. Bartholemew, 29, followed Locke with a time of 2:56:12, and took home $800.
"Next year's the qualifier for the Olympic trials; you have to go sub 2:48," said Fulton. "And probably, if the conditions are right, this is the right course to do it."
She predicted record numbers of runners at Steamtown in 2002.
"This is the race, I'll recommend it to anybody," Fulton said. "Just run smart. Run a good even pace."
Locke agreed. She said she came to Steamtown on the recommendation of a friend.
"He said it was a fast marathon; if I wanted to break three hours, this was the place to be," she said.
Not only did Locke sub three hours, at 2:52:58, she blew her personal best to pieces during her first run at Steamtown.
"It is 11 minutes better than my previous best," she said, grinning. "My friend gave me some good advice.
I would definitely recommend this marathon to other people, especially those who want to break through a barrier or qualify or something like that," she said. "It's a great race."
Locke not only captured second place, but at 40-years-old, she also had the fastest time in the women's masters division. But because the prize for second place in the overall women's race exceeds the $300 prize for winning the masters, race officials named second place winner Lindee Kent, 40, of Honesdale, PA the Masters champion. Kent's time was a personal best at 3:18:47. However, Locke's time, 2:52:58, will stand as the fastest masters time in Steamtown history.
Rudy Afanador won the men's masters division with a time of 2:46:27.
